You Wish
Nightmares on Wax is George Evelyn, a Leeds producer who has spent thirty years making music for the quieter end of the dance floor — trip-hop, downtempo, soul, and dub combined into a sound that is distinctly British and distinctly unhurried. Smoker's Delight (1995) is his finest record.
You Wish is characteristic N.O.W.: a loop that breathes rather than drives, bass frequencies felt as much as heard, samples surfacing through the mix with the quality of memory rather than presentation. Music for late evenings rather than early mornings.
Warp Records in the mid-1990s — home to N.O.W., Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre — was the most consistently excellent electronic music label in the world.
"Smoker's Delight is as close as electronic music has come to true stillness."
