Got 2 Luv U
The premise is simple. Sean Paul wants someone. That someone is played by Alexis Jordan. Stargate built the track to hold both of them. The bed is clean, the drop is firm, and there is just enough space for Paul’s patois to run alongside Jordan’s hook without either one crowding the other. Dancehall and pop radio had been trying to figure each other out since the early 2000s. This is one of the cleaner solutions. The chorus hits and keeps hitting. The song does not need to be more complicated than that.
Ryan Tedder originally wrote the song as a breakup record, working title “Not To Love You.” Stargate adapted it and the direction changed. By the time it reached Sean Paul it had been inverted into a love song. Stargate were the dominant production team of that moment. They had built tracks for Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo. Alexis Jordan had been signed to Roc Nation after a 2009 America’s Got Talent audition at fifteen. Stargate produced her debut single “Happiness” as well. The song arrived through the same production pipeline running most of pop in 2011.
The single dropped July 19, 2011 as a digital release on Atlantic and VP Records. It reached number eleven on the UK Singles chart and number 84 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sean Paul’s first peak had come in the early 2000s with “Temperature” and “Get Busy.” By 2011 he was back in pop playlists through collaborations. The BPI certified the single Gold in 2022 and later upgraded it to Platinum. “Got 2 Luv U” was the clearest argument for why that second run was working.
