Galvanize

The Chemical Brothers

Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons arrived in the mid-1990s and essentially invented a genre. "Big beat" — a collision of breakbeat, rock, acid house, and hip-hop with a physicality unlike anything else on the dance floor. The Chemical Brothers were its finest practitioners.

Galvanize features Q-Tip over a hypnotic North African-inflected groove that feels ancient even as the electronics crackle around it. The track won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording and introduced many listeners to the idea that electronic music could carry the weight of any rock record.

The Chemical Brothers have released nine studio albums across three decades and remain one of the few acts from the 1990s rave era who have never stopped sounding relevant. Their live show is widely considered among the best in electronic music.

"The Chemical Brothers have always understood that electronic music is physical music."
