Bye Bye

Marcy Playground

Marcy Playground are known almost exclusively for "Sex and Candy" — the 1997 single that reached number one and became one of the defining alt-rock earworms of the era. The rest of their self-titled debut is less remembered, but several tracks reward revisitation.

Bye Bye is one of their quieter moments: John Wozniak's voice unhurried, the arrangement spare, the song occupying a more reflective space than the hit. A reminder that the band had more range than one ubiquitous single suggested.

Marcy Playground have continued recording through numerous lineup changes. Their catalog exists in the long shadow of "Sex and Candy" — an unfair situation common to one-hit wonders who were more than that.

"Marcy Playground made a better album than anyone gave them credit for."
