Indians

Anthrax

Anthrax brought New York to thrash metal — a slightly different sensibility from the Bay Area bands, more aligned with hardcore punk, with a wit and self-awareness their West Coast contemporaries sometimes lacked. Among the Living (1987) is their finest record.

Indians is the album's most politically engaged track, addressing the treatment of Native Americans. The riff is among the band's most memorable, Scott Ian's rhythm guitar driving with characteristic precision.

Among the Living remains the peak of the Big Four thrash era — a record that has aged well because the playing is simply that tight.

"Among the Living is the New York answer to Reign in Blood — different city, same urgency."
