Operated On

Union of Knives were a Glasgow electronic rock duo — Neil Pennycook and Ivan Stefanov — who made one extraordinary album in 2006 before dissolving. Violence & Birdsong combined post-punk aggression with electronic production in a way that felt genuinely tense and urgent.

Operated On is the album's most powerful track: a drum machine rhythm that hits like hardware, synthesizers deployed as weapons rather than textures, Pennycook's vocal delivery matching the music's controlled violence.

Union of Knives are one of those bands whose absence is felt proportionally to how good that one record was. Violence & Birdsong deserved a follow-up. It didn't get one.
