Yesterday and Today
The Field
Axel Willner, recording as The Field, made one of the finest minimalist techno albums of the 2000s — From Here We Go Sublime (2007) built from short loops extended to the edge of hypnosis, each track a single fragment repeated until it becomes a landscape.
Yesterday and Today is the album's emotional center: a loop that gradually reveals its component parts over several minutes, building from a single element to something that feels orchestral despite being constructed from almost nothing.
The Field's subsequent records have refined and complicated the approach of their debut. That debut remains the purest statement: minimalism as a form of emotional amplification.
"The Field makes music that proves a loop is not a limitation."
