Bamboleo

Gipsy Kings

The Gipsy Kings are a family affair — brothers and cousins from the Reyes and Baliardo families, descendants of Spanish Roma who settled in southern France after the Spanish Civil War. Their fusion of flamenco, pop, and rumba catalana created a sound simultaneously deeply rooted and immediately accessible to international audiences.

Bamboleo was their breakthrough single in 1987 and remains their signature song: a melody that moves at the speed of celebration, acoustic guitars interlocking in the characteristic rumba rhythm, vocal harmonies built from voices that have been singing together since childhood.

The Gipsy Kings' relationship to their own commercial success is complicated — purists in the flamenco world were skeptical, while their pop success brought flamenco vocabulary to audiences who had never encountered it.

"Bamboleo is one of the most purely joyful recordings of the twentieth century."
