Left Behind

Bedhead

Bedhead were the quietest band in American indie rock — a Dallas band led by brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane who built their sound around interlocking guitar figures played at low volume, vocals delivered as if speaking to someone in the same room.

Left Behind, from their 1994 debut, is characteristic Bedhead: guitar lines that circle and develop over long durations, the rhythm section so restrained it almost disappears, the emotional content communicated by tone rather than emphasis. The song is not quiet because it lacks energy — it is quiet because that is exactly the right volume for what it has to say.

Bedhead dissolved in 1998, the Kadanes going on to form The New Year. Their catalog is small, consistent, and deeply rewarding for patient listeners.

"Bedhead proved that restraint is a form of emotional intensity."
