Institutionalized
Suicidal Tendencies existed at the intersection of hardcore punk and heavy metal — too heavy for punk audiences and too punk for metal audiences in 1983. Mike Muir's vocal delivery was comic, furious, and genuinely unhinged in ways that felt authentic.
Institutionalized became their defining song: a teenager's argument with his parents over whether he needs help, the escalating irrationality on both sides building to a conclusion that is both absurd and devastating. The "all I wanted was a Pepsi" moment entered popular culture.
The song was placed in Alex Cox's cult film Repo Man (1984) and has appeared in films and television ever since. It is the rare punk song that is funny, angry, and heartbreaking simultaneously.
"Institutionalized is the greatest punk song about family misunderstanding ever written."
