Young Folks

Peter Bjorn & John

Young Folks became inescapable in 2006-2007 — the whistled hook making it one of the most distinctive pop hooks of the decade, Victoria Bergsman's guest vocal adding warmth that the Peter Bjorn and John formula needed, the whole thing simple enough to seem inevitable and unusual enough to seem new.

The song's backstory is characteristic indie pop: recorded in Stockholm on a modest budget, the whistle hook added almost as an afterthought, the song becoming a global hit through word of mouth before the band had any idea it was happening.

Peter Bjorn and John's subsequent career has been spent living with and working around the identity that "Young Folks" created for them — a challenge they've handled with more grace and more musical range than most one-hook artists manage.

"Young Folks is the song that made whistling cool for the first and only time in modern pop."
